Cagbalete Island, Mauban Quezon

CB1

Cagbalete- Pansacola Beach

Cag2Cagbalete has long been a backpackers destination but according to the people at Mauban Quezon, it only became a popular destination last 2013. The boom that brought the volume of people going here nowadays maybe attributed to its proximity to Manila compared to a Calaguas. The influx of tourists has opened opportunities for the locals to cash-in in this new source of income. But as of 2015, given that its only two years after it became popular, the tourism infrastructure is still not fully developed.Cag1

The beaches are an ideal place to swim as it has bigger shallow portions similar to Alona Beach in Bohol. The white sand beach is a little coarser than Calaguas but is still one of the better white sand beaches near Manila. The island doesn’t have roads so the beaches on the far side of the island is still a challenge to reach either by foot or by boat. But the most popular destination as of this writing are the beaches near the pier up to the tip called Pansacola so walking by foot is not really a problem.

HOW TO GET THERE

CB2

The public boat where passengers are cramped

By car, Mauban is better reached via the Pagsanjan-Lukban road. Before entering the town of Lukban, there is a road going to your left that goes to Sampaloc Quezon, and then Mauban Quezon. From Manila, you can reach Pagsanjan either via SLEX or via the back door- the more scenic Rizal Province route. There is another road from Tayabas-Lucena that goes to Mauban and this is the route of the provincial buses. I would think this is farther if you have a private transportation. By public transportation, you can take the JAC Liner (www.jacliner.com) buses that goes direct to Mauban from Manila or you can take any bus that goes to Lucena and from Lucena, there are buses and UV express bound for Mauban. If you are taking your private vehicle, there are lots of private parking garages in Mauban that caters to this new tourism industry. There are signs when you enter to Mauban that points to the Tourism Office who can also advise where you can park your car.

CB3

The smaller transfer boat- still fully packed

From Mauban, after the mandatory Tourism registration with minimal fee, you can take a tricycle to the pier. There are regular but few in between public trips that goes to Cagbalete (i.e. 7AM, 1PM, 4PM) for a fee of 50 Php. If you are a group of more than 8, you can actually hire a private pump boat for around 2,000 Php. The pump boat is smaller so when the waves are rough, it’s more felt but its advantage is that it can take you straight to the beach front of your resort rather than the pier. The beach front in Cagbalete is shallow so when its low tide, the private boats can only anchor from a distance from the beach so you will still need to walk a few meters to go to your resort. The public boat on the other hand always anchors a few meters off the beach so there is this small boat that you need to ride from the boat to the beach but its free though as it is part of the service of the bigger boats.

ACCOMODATION

If you have been to Calaguas, the set-up is pretty much the same- though there are more than one established resort with accommodations, a lot of the younger tourist who goes there stays at tents (either rental or they brought it with them). The best resort in the island as of this writing is Pansacola Beach Resort (www.facebook.com/pansacolabeachresort). But it’s just funny that we had the same experience as in Calaguas (read the entry on Calaguas). The owners of the resort are hands-on and though the younger ones are very accommodating- don’t mess with the Matriarch. I’ll just leave it at that.

CB4

The beachfront at low tide

The resorts serves food as part of the package (if you intend to order there, you may not be accommodated when the resort is fully booked so if you are sure that you want to have their food, make it a part of the package). The foods, beverages (and water) are a bit pricey but there are a lot of stores outside the community which has cheaper goods but still more expensive than the regular price so the budget tourists usually brings their water and food from the mainland.

You can also search the net for other accommodations, packages and information such as:

THINGS TO DO

With regards to sport facilities and activities- you need to bring it yourselves as the infrastructure is fairly new and those amenities will come later.

Boracay Island, Malay Aklan

Bora8

Boracay Island

Boracay Island is the premier beach in the country. Nuff said. Being the most popular locally and globally, resources already abounds the internet so I will no longer focus on re-inventing the wheel. However, off the beaten write-ups-

Bora4

Puka Beach

PUKA BEACH

Puka Beach this the third popular beach within the island of Boracay. The sand here is rougher than the first two but nonetheless made of corals but bigger in diameter.

Bora3

How about biking the entire island?

Between Puka Beach and Ilig-iligan are smaller private coves. These currently has no names and will eventually be named at the behest of the owner of the property. Near these small coves are the Bat Cave, Crystal Cave and Buslugan Cave.

Bora2

One of the private coves between Puka and Ilig-iligan

ILIG-ILIGAN BEACH

Ilig-iligan is mostly occupied by the bigger private resorts at he other end of the island. It is actually connected to the Lapuz Lapuz Beach and locally considered contiguous and one and the same Ilig-iligan beach.

Bora1

The center of water sports- Bulabog

BULABOG BEACH

The other side of White Beach is the second most popular- Bulabog Beach. It is the usual destination for the more adventurous water sports such as kite surfing and paragliding.

WHITE BEACH
Of course the most popular- considered as “The Boracay” is the White Beach.

Bora7

Finally on the side near Aklan are the smaller less popular beaches- Lagutan Beach, Tambisaan Beach, Manoc-Manoc Beach and Cagbagan Beach.

Maricaban Island, Tingloy, Batangas

Anilao (4)

Maricaban Island Beach

Caban1

Proximity from Manila

Maricaban Island is one of the closest beach from Manila with fine white sand shoreline (the other being Puerto Galera).

Maricaban Island and Caban Island are under the island municipality of Tingloy Batangas. The island is accessible by motor boat from Mabini Batangas specifically from the popular dive spot – Anilao. Since Anilao does not have white sand beaches despite the wonderful corals reefs making it popular to divers, tourist usually go to the surrounding islands of Maricaban or the smaller Sombrero Island for some beach sand action.

Maricaban Island has several beach fronts most of whom are already private properties. But some of those properties still allow boats to visit with minimal entrance fee. Some of the popular beaches includes Masasa Beach (public), Olympic Point (private) and Eagle Point (private).

Caban2

Maricaban Island

HOW TO GET THERE

Anilao (7)

From the Cottage

From Manila you can take buses bound for Batangas City. Then you can ride jeepneys bound for Bauan Batangas. From there you can ride a jeep or tricycle to popular dive spot of Anilao. From Anilao, hire a pump boat to Maricaban Island or if you would like to take the regular public boats, you look for the regular boats to the island from Anilao Port.

If you have private transportation, from Manila take SLEX and then STAR tollways and at the Batangas junction after exiting STAR tollways, turn right towards Bauan Batangas. From Bauan go to Mabini Batangas (the Mabini circumferential road is already finished so either way (left or right) will meet at the tip of the peninsula. But the regular route is the one from the right (doing a counter clockwise).

WHERE TO STAY

Anilao (5)

Great place for kids to swim

There are resorts available at the island of Maricaban but you can still stay at Anilao which has more accommodation options to offer. You can then rent a boat for a day trip to the island.

THINGS TO DO

Besides beach activities and water sports, Anilao is popular for diving. You can also explore the surrounding islands which includes Bonito Island, Balahibong Manoc Island, Sombrero Island and Caban Island. The highest point in the island, Mag Asawang Bato is a good hike at 800 MASL which offers a 360 vista of the the island. Another peak is the Pinagbanderahan at 600 MASL. Anilao is also an interesting place to explore. It is also popular to hikers for its Gulugod Baboy mountain.

Ocamocam Beach

Ocamocam from Manila

Proximity from Manila

Ocamocam Beach is located at New Busuanga, Busuanga Town in the island of Busuanga Palawan. Busunga Island is composed of two towns, Busuanga and Coron but the place is most popular to tourists simply as Coron. Because of the numerous wonderful, and more superior beaches and tourist spots in Coron, Ocamocam has not been placed on the must list for those visiting Coron. Add to that is the difficult access to the place as it is at the other side and less developed part of the island. The usual reason for tourist to go on this part of the island is if one is looking for a more isolated and rustic place and/or if one is using this as a jump-off on exploring Calauit Island which is popular for its sanctuary composing of popular African animals such as giraffes and zebras.

Ocam (4)

Sunset at Ocam

The beach itself is inferior compared to those is Coron with coarser light brown sand. But what it lacks on the beach itself, it can compensate with the rich corals and very clear and calm water. It was surprising during our visit that in the early hours in the morning, the water was still as if you are in a lake and not in a sea. The surprise asset that will make this place a must see is that this is one of the few places in the Philippines where you can see the Philippine Sea Cow or Manatee.

Since the place is remote and not yet fully developed, there is only one accommodation which has limited electricity. It may sound adventurous to some but inconvenient during the hot summer nights. More on this later.

HOW TO GET THERE

Ocam (6)

The calm water in the morning

Coron is accessible via Plane from Manila (PAL www.philippineairlines.com or Cebu Pacific www.cebupacificair.com). It takes 45 minutes to reach Coron. The airport is near the town of Coron which is the more developed one between the two towns. You can ride a jeepney or UV Vans to go to Coron. Another option is to take the Super Ferry (2GO) (www.travel.2go.com.ph) ship to Coron from Manila. It is convenient as it is only an overnight trip. The ship leaves at around 6PM and when you wake up the next day, you are already at Coron.

Ocamocam is 70 kilometers from Coron. A new road has been built to go directly to Ocamocam Beach Resort. While the road to New Busuanga is also being developed as it is the access point to Calauit Island. You can get your ride from Coron to Ocamocam (I advise that you contact Ocamocam Beach Resort to make arrangements for the trip. As an alternative, you can ride a boat from Coron to Ocamocam as the usual practice for tourist going to Calauit Island.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Ocam (5)

Rustic Accomodation

As mentioned, there is currently only one resort at Ocamocam Beach, Ocamocam Beach Resort. The resort has a website (http://www.ocamocam.com/). Note that the place only uses a generator set to light a few light bulbs so there are no air-condition or fan available. In our experience, we had a mosquito net on our bed which actually adds to the humid feeling but you can’t sleep without it as there are mosquitoes plus if you use a light at night, you will be surprised to the number of different insects clinging in your mosquito nets which reminds you on the documentaries on cable where they use cloths to sample insect population on remote jungles. One advice if to bring with you some insect repellant lotion.

THINGS TO DO

Ocam (1)

Giraffes at Calauit Nature Reserve.

The place is a perfect place to do some snorkeling due to the large expanse of coral reefs and at shallow water. If you get lucky you can even catch a glimpse of the local resident manatee (sea cow or dugong). There are also neighboring islands that you can explore which offers its own adventure.

The popular place to visit within the vicinity is the Calauit Island Nature Reserve (http://calauitisland.com/).

Laiya, Barangay Hugom, San Juan, Batangas

Laiya (5)

Laiya Beach

LaiyaRating

Laiya is a very popular weekend destination among young people looking for a quick break from school or office work. The popularity of the place is due to its accessibility from Manila (proximity and cost), which I may say is one of the best beach near Manila, with an approximately 2-3 hour travel time. Though the sand in Laiya is not comparable to another near-Manila  destination, Puerto Galera. The  sand in Laiya, though composed of corals, are rather coarse which is a disappointment for children who finds it difficult to create sand castles as the sand wont stick which each other. San Juan’s advantage from Puerto Galera is it will not require any boat ride.

LaiyaMap

Proximity of Laiya from Manila

The other nearest and comparable options that are inland Luzon Island with respect to Manila is quite far like the ones in the far end of Quezon Province or in Zambales. Aside from proximity, the numerous accommodations that cater to all levels of tourists make San Juan  even more popular. I would say Laiya is one of the places that has a lot of options in terms of resort selection as the more than 5 kilometers stretch of beach are divided among different property owners who has developed their piece of lot into their own version of a beach resort. However, it is quite surprising that a beach popular amongst the young people does not have any night life. So this is really more of a place to rest and recharge.   The place is popular within the hiking and mountaineering community as it has one of the best easy treks near Manila- the Mt. Daguldol Mountain Range.

Laiya1

Laiya Beach from La Luz Resort

There are lots of developments happening near the vicinity of San Juan Batangas so much more in the future as two cities near the place, Lipa City and Lucena City has been endorsed by NEDA as the future secondary metropolis hubs along side Subic-Clark and Tarlac that would support Mega Manila. The opening of the STAR Expressway extension to Batangas Pier further cuts travel time to San Juan. Before, the usual route to San Juan is SLEX, then STAR exiting Lipa City (the previous end point of STAR). And then from Lipa, you travel to Padre Garcia, then Rosario and then San Juan.  Nowadays, you go further STAR and exit Ibaan then go straight to Rosario and then San Juan.

Another option, especially if you are located in the South Eastern part from Manila (Rizal), or if you are looking for a scenic road trip is to go to Pagsanjan Laguna via Rizal (backdoor). From Pagsanjan, go to the historic town of Lucban passing by Kaliraya Lake (Cavinti) and Luisiana. Then pass by Tayabas, Sariaya and Candelaria before reaching San Juan.

Laiya (6)

Yacht parked at the bay.

From San Juan town proper, Barangay Hugom is still around 20 kilometers. Note that recently (2014), the road that ends in Hugom is being extended to connect to Lobo Batangas. It made accessible the other former private resorts previously only reachable by foot. The road also made the jump-off to Mt Gulugod Baboy accessible from the road side of the newly built road.

By Land-Commuting (Bus, UV Express)

One way to go to Laiya by Bus is by taking a bus bound for Batangas City (ALPS (http://www.alpsthebus.com/), JAC (http://www.jacliner.com/), JAM (http://jam.com.ph/)). From Batangas City you can take a jeepney ride to San Juan Batangas.

Another option is to take a Bus to Lipa City. From Lipa city, you can ride FX/UV transport to San Juan Batangas.

From San Juan Public Market, you can ride the jeepneys that goes to Barangay Hugom/ Laiya. Another option is to ride a tricycle to Laiya. As metioned, from San Juan town proper, it is still 20 kilometers to Laiya so consider that in riding a tricycle.

ACCOMMODATION

Laiya (1)

One of the private resorts for rent.

During the early 2000, most of the resorts in Laiya are cheap cottages and huts. Some of the properties are more of private resorts but some has already opened their resorts to public but only for exclusive renting. One of the first popular resorts in the place was La Luz Resort. Nowadays, there are a couple of high end resorts but the local cottages are still present. Here are some of the popular resorts in Laiya (note that the lower end cottages, of course, do not have internet presence):

THINGS TO DO

GB

Mt. Daguldol Peak

Since the tourism infrastructure in Laiya is fully developed, there are a lot of options for activities. Most of the popular water sports from jet skiing to kayaking are available. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also popular. You can arrange these with the resort you are staying with.

As previously mentioned, the place is also a popular hiking destination. The destination is one of the peak of the mountain range simply called Mt. Daguldol.

There is a guide’s organization where you can arrange for guides to trek the mountain. Mt. Daguldol is considered a minor climb by local standards and you can do it in a day as ascending will take you around 3 hours and going down will take you about 2 hours.

Daguldol (1)

The Falls on the way to the Peak

There is a small waterfalls along the trail going up. The destination is one of the peak with the best view of the surrounding environs.

Aside from these activities, Batangas area is a rich cultural and historical site. There are also a lot of tourist spot within this province. You can factor theses locations as side trips in your visit to Laiya.

Mahabang Buhangin, Tinaga Island, Calaguas Group of Islands, Vinzon’s Camarines Norte

Calaguas10

Calaguas Picturesque Beach

Calaguas Rating

Tinaga Island is an island located in Vinzons Camarine Norte. It is one of the two major islands in the Calaguas group of islands, the other being Guintinua Island. It is the biggest island in the group which is about 8 kilometers long.

Tinaga Island is famous for its long white sand beach called “Mahabang Buhangin” (“Halabang Bagbay” to some locals) which literally means “long beach.” But the place is more popularly known simply as “Calaguas” by backpackers and tourists alike.

Calaguas

Proximity from Manila

The place is rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination due to its fine white sand beach comparable to that of the world famous Boracay Island.

The tourism infrastructure in the island is not yet developed which is a disadvantage for traditional tourists but a blessing for those who prefers the off-beaten path.

HOW TO GET THERE

By Land (Driving)

Calaguas3

The Beach Front as seen from the highest point.

The jump-off point to Calaguas is either through the towns of Paracale or Vinzons. Paracale is 316 Kilometers from Manila while Vinzons is farther southwards at 323 Kilometers, so most of those driving to the port or usually go to Paracale. Driving time is around 7 hours. It is recommended to leave Manila at around 2-3 AM, arriving at Paracale at around 9-10 AM. But note that if you will be staying in some resorts in the island, then you have to coordinate the travel time as they may have their own outrigger boat which has its own fixed schedule of trips leaving in the morning that you need to catch.

In the town of Paracale, there are inns, restaurants and other establishments that accepts overnight parking for a minimal fee of around 150 Php per night. If you need further assurance, you can ask the resort you will be staying to assist you in securing a parking space upon your arrival.

By Air (Plane)

Calaguas7

The fine powdered white sand beach comparable to Boracay.

A few years back, there were flights to Daet Camarines Norte but as of 2014, that route was abandoned. Not sure when will it be back but in case there is, then you only need to drive to Vinzons which is nearer from Daet than Paracale.

The current and only option when taking a plane is via Naga City and from Naga City, Daet is still a 2-hour drive. There are buses in Naga bound for Daet or you can take a van from the Naga Van Terminal. Trips start at around 5 AM and the last trip is around 7 PM. Philippine Airlines (www.philippineairlines.com) and Cebu Pacific (www.cebupacificair.com) has flights to Naga City.

By Land- Commute (Bus)

If taking a bus, Superlines has direct trips to Paracale/Panganiban. Another option is to take Daet (via Sta Elena) bound buses (Philtranco (www.philtranco.com.ph), Daet Express, Amihan Express). Get off at a junction in Jose Panganiban where you can take a tricycle to Paracale. Another option is to get off at the town of Labo where you can catch another bus ride to Paracale. Fare is around 500 Php.

Train

Calaguas6

Waling’s and Calaguas’ most luxurious accommodation (as of 2014).

Bicol bound trains are also unpredictable. Sometimes it’s operational, sometimes it’s not (As of 2014 it’s not). You can check in their Facebook site (https://www.facebook.com/pnrailways) or call 319-0041 local 122 or 319-0048. In case it’s available then your destination will be Naga City. And from there, follow the same instruction as listed in the previous section (by plane via Naga City).

The train leaves every other day at around 6:30 PM, with stops at Espana (6:38 PM), Pasay Road (6:56 PM), Alabang (7:20 PM) and arriving in Naga at around 4:30 AM.

Boat to Tinaga Island

Calaguas1

Other cottage option at Walings.

In going to Tinaga Island, there are three options. First is to rent a boat. Renting an outrigger boat is around 3,000 Php for the smaller ones that can accommodate around 5-8 persons and 3,500-4,000 Php for those that can accommodate around 8-12 persons. That is already both ways going in and out of the island.

Second option is to ride a boat with the other tourists going in to Mahabang Buhangin. You can talk to boat operators to help you secure a ride with other people who are also looking to share their ride. There are no problems securing one during the summer months especially on weekends due to the volume of visitors.

The third option is to ride the local trips which goes to Barangay Mangkawayan, the inhabited part of the island. From that Barangay, you can walk (10 minutes walk) towards Mahabang Buhangin. But note that there are no regular trips to that area so you also need to wait for one to become available. Boat fare is around 100 Php.

The boat ride is around 2 hours so if you have kids with you, prepare them for the long boat ride.

Calaguas

Playing at the Beach.

ACCOMMODATION

Calaguas5

The fine sand which is cool even during high noon.

As of 2014, there are only 2 resorts offering fixed structure accommodations and only one that offers higher end accommodation with full meals inclusive. The rest offers tents as accommodation which is pretty much a challenge usually at high noon where the heat is unbearable inside the tent. Also in case you go there during the rainy season, such tents are also questionable so be careful as you might end up soaked and miserable.

For most of the places which offers tents, you only need to pay the entrance/ camping/ beach fee of around 200 Php plus a municipal/ environmental/ Barangay fee of around 50 Php. Then you need to rent a tent or a cottage for around 300 Php. Most of these facilities are owned by locals and they are usually promoted by partnering with the ever increasing lists of tour operators to Calaguas who has the resources to promote their resort. Here are some examples:

The only fully developed accommodation as of writing (2014) is Waling Waling (http://waling.com). But since it’s the only one existing, I would say sometimes you feel like the people managing the resort knows that fact so their customer service is a little to be desired as you do not have any other choice. When we had our stay there, families and relatives of the owners were also staying so we felt like we were second class guests during that time which should be the other way around (they should know that even their own family should know that customer should comes first (or at least equal), otherwise, they should just close the resort for their own private use rather than letting guests experience such treatment). The local employees of the resort, on the other hand, were very polite and accommodating which compensate for the negative feedback.

Calaguas4

The Beach which only gets crowded on weekends

Tinaga Island was almost bare a few years ago (circa 2010), a proof that the place was just recently developed. But because of the rapid development due to the recent popularity, I would assume new accommodations would come out frequently so I advice that you check on the web for updates to available accommodations.

THINGS TO DO

The beach is a great place to swim. The slope is gradual with huge shallow spaces and the water is normally calm. There are few rocks and corals near the shore so its convenient to walk barefoot.

Calaguas8

Hike to the Top

Snorkeling on the other hand will require you to go farther either near the stone outcrop about 500 meters from the shore or on the west most end of the beach as corals are located only on these spots.

There are limited available facilities for water sports like kayaks. During weekends, beach parties are organized with loud speakers so if you are staying on the tent cities, you better accept the fact that music, and worst karaoke, will be played into the wee hours of the night. This is where staying at Waling has its advantages. Its more private and quiet on the exclusive resorts (the tents are scattered side by side one another so the partying at night extends between these tents).

Calaguas2

The beach from the other vantage point.

One activity to do in the island is to hike atop the highest point of the land. You can asks children to guide you for a few pesos but you can actually climb without any guides as the trail is easy to follow once you find the trail head. There is also another trail on the opposite side of the beach for a good vantage point of the beach front but this one has a minimal entrance fee from the lot owner.

Calaguas9

Sunset at Walings

Barangay Mankawayan, the inhabited part of the island is a 10 minute walk from Mahabang Buhangin.

You can also rent a boat to go island hopping to the surrounding islands within the Calaguas Chain of Islands.

Other than that, the environs near Calaguas would be a great place to explore starting from the jump-off town of Paracale.

Tinaga Island is at a cross road right now. Its rising popularity is something the locals can cash in which will come with the development of the place. Some sectors don’t want this to be developed as “like-Boracay.” But some thinks the other way around saying “what’s bad about Boracay?” In the end, balance between development, preservation and protection thus ensuring that the “goose that lays the golden egg” be protected for their and their children’s good should be the utmost priority.
